Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre | Artist Nguyen Ga-Yee's Installation Work - Phantom
Description
Artist Nguyen Ga-Yee has a unique emotional connection and artistic observation of Hong Kong's urban culture. She collects plastic toys, stationery, and ready-made objects with nostalgic charm and characteristics of Hong Kong, creating three-dimensional sculptures. With the aid of light projection technology, the artist brings to life an artistic rendition of Hong Kong's iconic city skyline.
In this exhibition, Nguyen Ga-Yee continues her signature style, creating two brand new installations specially for the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. The inspiration for these works stems from the trend of setting up musical fountains in the public spaces of shopping malls during the 1990s, a city landscape with era characteristics that gradually declined after the millennium. Through her large-scale site-specific art installations, the artist skillfully blends dynamic light and shadow with ready-made objects that carry collective memories, evoking recollections of those public spaces in former malls and prompting contemplations on the city's rhythm and societal transformations.
